Week Ending 1st April Gym Update

The Gym has taken on a new look with a lot of smart storage, creating more room in such a limited space for the gym users.

The outdoor circuit area is still under construction with shade mesh still to be installed.

The spin classes are all nearly fully booked and the new instructors all doing a great job, to an point that I now feel dispensible.

The regular road and mountain bike rides are continuing, and the guys are keeping a good eye out for the girls to make sure their rides are safe and enjoyable in my absence.

The coffee shop also has taken on a bit of a new look, with the addition of a magnificent "Harley" sign, that beckons the arrival of my Fat Bob Harley soon.

Also, there is more, with the addition of a new bike rack, which hopefully will attract more people to ride to the gym and have a safe and secure spot to park their bike.

Gym Update - Week Ending 16th March 2012

This week each spin class had a new instructor, virtually trained from scratch last week, and I am surprised how good they are, I just sit and watch and sulk.
I will name each class by instructor:
Monday Morning 9am Spin with Annie (Millsy Backup - voice only)
Monday Night 6pm Spin with Rohan (Millsy Backup - voice only)
Wednesday Night 6 pm Spin with Macca (Elaine is on a fitness regime and may share this night soon)
Thursday Night 6pm Spin with the Fast Moving Bec (Millsy Backup - voice only) NOTE TIME CHANGE TO 6.30 START FOR THIS CLASS ONLY.
The Gym is having a little make over and the results I think is more room for members and less clutter.
Payment for a spin class will be $10 or $5 (seniors, jobless or juniors) paid up front on the night to enable a clean payment to me and the instructor each night. I will be flexible with an IOU system as well.
Hopefully the outdoor area will get more use for circuit training and stretching.
I have never enjoyed the gym as much as the last week.
Kaye called with all her cleaning gear and scrubbed the floors, polished mirrors etc.
The coffee machine has had a floggin.
thank you everyone.
cheers millsy
The photo below is Rohan doing his first class to a full house and I think I actually ditched the ginger beer for a real one in that photo.

Cancer Journey Update 14/3/2012

Another quick Cancer Update
The last few nights have all been similar with trying to sleep, the smaller dose of steriod doesn't seem to make much difference but the anxiety pills do slow me down and knock me out for a few hours, when I awake I have no idea of where I am or anything for a couple of minutes.
Every day I am getting more mobility but need to work on my balance.
It was my birthday yesterday and I think I may had been sub consciously trying to buy myself some presents the other night. Colleen has my credit cards, but she doesn't understand ebay and paypal, so I have made a few small purchases via paypal without any drama.
I am still waiting for my new drug to arrive in Mildura and hopefully tomorrow it happens, in the meantime I remain hyper active during the day and well into the night.
I love having the gym open and people returning and chatting, it is the best therapy.
Yesterday, I had a really great day for my birthday, went to lunch with some school buddies, and then a joy flight in a small plane with a friend. We started from the Wentworth Airport, followed the river to Mildura and GolGol, returned back toward Pooncarie to view the water coming down the Darling, then land again at Wentworth. I was privileged to be his first legal passenger (I was told this afterwards) but I always had full confidence in him. While in the air I rang Colleen as our house came in view and I saw her out in the court waving as we circled around. Fantastic.
The other story I will share is what I do in the Middle of a sleepless night.
I recently purchased a Disco Ball that was going out cheap and I installed it in my Group Fitness Room, for the occasional late night class laugh. If you have followed some of the past blogs I have mentioned my son telling me one night when I suffering from all the medications “ Dad, just hang up a disco ball, put on the Bee Gees 'Staying Alive' you'll be ok.”
Ok , it's 2.30am on my birthday, I decide to purchase the song 'Staying alive”on I-tunes, go out side to the Gym, start the disco lights, play the music, do a John Travolta salute, while videoing it and send it to my son in Canada, but neither Colleen or Dale would help out, they think I'm going crazy.
I get shitty because I think it will be an hilarious thing to do on my birthday and sending to my son Ryan in Canada who is also celebrating his birthday. (our birthdays are one day apert). Stuff everyone, I'm doing it. You will find it in my Facebook and there are also two bonus tracks, The Beatles - 'when I'm 64' and an old favourite of mine - Neil Young's 'Old Man. Look at my life'.

I had better pill up and try to sleep.

PS: I did turn 64 yesterday

Gym Report - BodyBusiness Members support the 2012 Lindeman's Tour De Murray.

Perfect weather greeted the participants who entered either the Mayoral Walk, Mountain Bike Ride or Road Ride of either a 30km / 75km / 115km distance.
The gym was well represented in all the events and I counted over 20 BodyBusiness members. Well done guys, it makes me feel proud. I was lucky to get pushed along in Mayoral 7km walk by my at the Christie Centre and we all had a good time.
The BBQ commenced at mid-day and the food was glorious. Again, Gym members were involved and sacrifised the ride to prepare the BBQ. Thanks Guys.
The big Marque had a good atmosphere happening with a lot of chatter and laughter. The local Re Twy Quando club hit their straps with some well controlled kicks and punches and were well received by the audience.
I hope this event contiues into the future as I attended the initial meeting between Mildura Rotary and Mallee Family Care and was the Ride Director for about 10 years until my illness did not allow me to continue.
Well done to the organisers.
Cheers Millsy
PS: I think I have recruited another spin instructor, she is sitting on Billy Wass's lap below, and that top Jacko is wearing was one of the original tops we wore in the very first "Italia Spring Tours" about 12 years ago. I nearly threw all the old tops out the other day, now half the gym are wearing them.

Cancer Journey Update 10/3/2012

I won't go into much detail at what happened last night but the 5 days of no sleep came to a head and I was reduced to nothing more than a crying baby, sleep deprivation is dangerous and in my case the high dose steroid the cause, consequently my IPHONE and credit card were confiscated.
I went to the Mildura Base Physio for assessment and happy with my progress, left leg the problem, but still hopeful to regain full strength. I really need the left leg to be strong because that leg is used to hold the motorbike up and when cycling it is that same action.
Colleen went for a ride with her friend Alison and I got back to rebuilding an old bike for a friend in Melbourne, who is also going through sleep problems. The phone rings “we are down at the Marina with a flat tyre” I smirk and think, fix a flat for a credit card card, but really I am glad it happened as I always do it for them and they need to learn. When phone instruction was unsuuccessful I finally realised I am capable of driving an auto, so I drove to the Marina.
I was supposed to help out with the Tour De Murray Marque erection (observation only) but too tired. Today my steriod has been halved and I took an anxiety pill which worked and I finally had a 4 hour deep sleep to be awaken by the lovely Bertilla (pictured below) who helped me express my feelings on what happened the night before.
I have a had a huge tea and still feel tired so this looks good for a big sleep tonight. One funny thing happened while I was making fresh fruit salad for tea tonight, Else, friend of mine dropped some lovely passionfruit and I thought I would add it to the top of the mixed fruit. Take a look at the photo below, they were as dry as a wooden tit. Thanks Else, but it was great having you visit.
Time for Bed, Goodnight .
PS I am now the proud owner of a 11 inch MacBook Air 1,7 GHz 128GB storage and a lovely huge 240 mm Fat Wheel for the Harley,

Gym Update - Week Ending 9th March 2012

The Gym opened this week with no Spin Classes, as I need to assess each class and find instructors to help out. Most of the gym regulars returned this week and I am glad to have had a quiet start.
Next week I will do the Monday Morning Oldies Spin Class from my wheelchair, because they are all keen to get back into action. Check out the pic below of Pat, who is now wired up for performance. Hopefuuly I have instuctors for Monday, Wednesday and Thursday Night classes, but the wheelchair instructor will still be available if all else fails. Discussion to change the Thursday Class start time is also needed.
The outdoor circuit area is about to get a bit of attention, with some shade cloth going up, and also the return of the Boxing Bag.
All Road and Off Road rides will continue, however, this Sunday there is no ride due to the "The Tour De Murray"

FEBRUARY MEMBER OF THE MONTH

Congratulations Jacko for keeping the Mountain Bikes Rides going while I was in hospital, & the many punctures repaired on the girls bikes. Also your awesome effort at the Tour Down Under Community Ride in Adelaide in January 2012. Keep it up mate. (the lap pool has gone green, it needs attention)The Photo is Jacko conquering Meglers Hill during the Adelaide Community Ride

Cancer Journey Update

Welcome to my very first blog. I am off facebook to express my thoughts, it is not a good forum for me to express this stuff. I would prefer if a friend is interested in how I am going, it is better for them to go to a sight like this for info. rather than me telling a lot of people who probably have had an overload of my news. I still feel it is good therapy for me to express my feelings on paper, then daily move on.
Yesterday, Wednesday 8th was a good day with walking & balance improvement to a point where i swept the gym out held up by the broom action, got very excited and had to sit down a few times to gather my brief. A few gym members called in, some to work out and others looking for coffee only from the freshly cleaned expresso bar.
I scared them with my exercises as I need to actually scream a bit as I try to complete the upward movement of a squat. Colleen joined us and again I get emotional about everything, it is hard to contain. Not a very restful arfo, the high does steriod still plays havoc with my sleep pattern and energy levels.
I refered about two or three calls for massage to other masseures today, so if any of you masseurs out there want work, give me a ring. I might be able to change my message to redrirect on the phone.
A couple more gym members turn up and again a bit more emotion, but possibly it needs to happen. Poor Colleen, I hassled her all afternoon about going to the library and getting me a new toothbrush, to a point close to my rage, which I desperately try to manage. But eventually it happened and we went to the library, Dale came too and we had a good time.
Dale got KFC and I was very hungry but Colleen wouldn't allow it so I sulked. (she already had tea planned) We had another arguement about the bloody toothbrush on the way home that Colleen did a u-turn to go back for it. Went to bed after a nice tea and actually had my best sleep for days.
It is 2am and I am wide awake and very alert, no way can I go back to sleep so will read some harley mags about modifying my new harley.
Oh, one interesting thing that happened today before I sign out - I answered the door today to two young girls rattling a can for charity, one turned out to be an ex. gym member who I didn't recognise because she had teeth braces on ( sorreeee lucy) I asked who are you collecting for "Relay for Life" oh that's a good cause I say, we have a chat then they leave. All of a sudden, the penny dropped and I realised that is my cancer's biggest fund raiser in Mildura and I cracked up with emotion again, it's embarrasing.
Great workout today shimu, hope you don't mind your photo on my first blog (maybe I should ask for permission first)
cheers and out.

News Update

Good news, the Gym is open again, but for members only.
No new members, spin classes or massage bookings will be taken.
Send me a txt and between Colleen & myself we will open the doors for it's use ( you made need to dust down the equipment before use though)
The regular Mountain Bike River rides & Saturday Road rides are continuing, & hopefully in 3-4 weeks I may be able to join you all, missing our coffee stops.
My health is improving daily & I hope to be able to walk out & join you in your sessions soon.
Il have my own daily rehab session in the gym, whichis under instruction from the Mildura Base Hospital Physio.

My Latest Cancer Trip - A Bit Of Humour And Some Other Stuff

It started around Christmas, that damn pain in my back again and I did not suspect the cause was my cancer as my current treatment was keeping the readings low. I got massaged and tried acupuncture for relief but nothing worked. I degenerated from walking with a stick to a walking frame & then to a wheel chair in 3-4 weeks then finally succumbed to being virtually bed ridden for relief. Pain killers were not effective & finally an MRI was arranged & confirmed the cancer was back & very active, nibbling at my lower lumbar & developing a Plasmacytoma lump ( something like a benign tumour) which was pushing on my spinal cord & paralysing my left leg. An air ambulance flight to Melbourne for urgent treatment was arranged .

I was met by my oncologist, a surgeon & a radiologist. The surgeon thought an operation would fix the problem quickly but a very risky procedure due to closeness to the spinal cord. Radiation was then decided as the best option, not guaranteed though, but would take 3 weeks of treatment and some possible suffering from the side effects. Radiation it was and I coped with the sickness and nausea a little better than previous chemo treatment..I lost 6kg in 2 weeks and put back 2 kg in the last week after better managing the side effects. The radiation worked & during the treatment I could feel movement & muscle activation gradually improve & significant pain reduction.

On the lighter side of things my cancer journey, as always, provides some humour & good times, but I must confess to the dark side also, when negative thoughts hit the brain when you can't sleep late at night, but usually loud head phone music to something like 'Pink Floyd' Dark Side Of The Moon hits the spot.

A few funny stories are based around my continual upset stomach so bare with me. I was in the middle of a 1hr MRI session where you must remain still in a confined space within a tubular chamber structure. The operator gives you an emergency button for help if needed and also talks through your headphones during the session to check on you. I developed a pain in the belly about 40 minutes in and tried desperately to hold off either farting or doing myself in. Eventually and luckily I only passed wind but the smell lingered & was horrible. The operator asked “ How are you doin Pete” and I told her what happened. When finished & I was taken back out, she was still laughing & said that my comment was the funniest she has heard from anyone inside the chamber before.

Another day I was still having constipation issues & was well dossed up to fix the problem. It was my first day in a wheelchair and I decided to escape the confines of my room and buy a feed at the hospital cafeteria as I was struggling to eat the hospital food. I selected some lovely spicy mixed Chinese food and scoffed it all down, then with my new found freedom in the wheelchair, ventured outside to get some fresh air and start reading a book. After 30 minutes of relaxed reading I developed a big stomach ache & thought I better find a toilet quick.I started to panic because I couldn't find a toilet in the maze of corridors in the Austin Hospital, but finally I sped towards one and smashing through the door and luckily finding no-one in there, I needed to prop the cubicle open with the wheelie & virtually crawl over to the pan for relief in the nick of time.

Daily radiation meant being trolleyed from my bed & into a waiting ambulance and a small trip to a nearby Radiation Centre, about a 30 minutes wait & treat & then return. My regular trolley driver was a nice chap & he told me he went to the Rod Stewart concert at Hanging Rock at the weekend and dressed up wig and all as Rod Stewart. I started singing the 'I am sailing' song and we had a laugh. The next day he turns up with the wig and said 'put it on' it's a real chick magnet. So, back into the Austin Hospital we go and everyone is looking & smiling & sure enough back into my room we are followed by half a dozen nurses.

The last week of treatment saw me transferred to an Aged Care Facility within wheelchair distance from the Radiation Centre. I will always have vivid memories of the exercise classes, meditation class & sitting in the only lounge room watching TV with a dozen oldies, all 80+, no one talking, everyone dozing & come medication time it reminded me of the movie 'One flew over the cuckoo's nest' . Really though, they were lovely oldies & I helped out a bit during the day trying to talk with them & I read the newspaper to a nice old blind man who was also partly deaf. I was part of their strict rules & was not allowed out of the facility, not allowed to use the toaster without supervision & firmly disciplined for travelling with my walking frame while unaided.

This one is not a humorous story, but how sad it is when the person in the bed next to you dies during the night and is not there the next morning. My phone charger would not work and I had a loan of my neighbour's charger. During the night the family were called in and he was transferred to the quiet room. I still had his charger but thought it not an issue as he won't need it any more, but luckily I managed to return it the next day. It still brings tears to my eyes when cancer victims you get to know only for a few days pass away like that.

The following is a quick story in support of nurses currently seeking more recognition of their work.
One night in my ward a patient had a Psychotic attack late at night & chased my nurse down the corridor threatening her with a metal bar. He also came into my room and threatened my neighbour. as I cringed and couldn't help in any way. Security took too long to arrive, but after an hour of drama, things quietened down. Crikey, that night took a toll on the ward. Apparently he was an ex detective reliving a crime scene. The next day he apparently did not remember anything happening.

Getting back to the serious side again, my current treatment has failed and I been allowed to go on a drug called Valcade, which is only allowed when all other avenues have failed. The drug can have a horrible side effect but luckily it is a rare occurrence and there is now a method of administration of the drug that minimises the risk. Fingers crossed this works for me, however I also have some stored stem cells that also allows a period of time for some quality of life.

I am really lucky to have Colleen, my carer, really trying to get me to slow down & behave. Thank you to all the get well wishes from everyone, 'face book' has been great for me to keep in touch with people & things & I hope to be riding my new Harley in the near future.
